2011 Policy Roundup

Much Ado About a Do-Nothing Congress

Although it appears Washington DC is a place where not much is happening policy-wise, it’s a hubbub of policy activity—the major media just doesn’t cover it.  With respect to microbusinesses, AEO was at the forefront of pushing significant initiatives in 2011.

To start the conversation on Capitol Hill and the  White House, AEO kicked off its “One in Three” initiative.  Among other policy suggestions, it found that if only one in …

2011 was a great year for me as AEO afforded me the opportunity to participate in the important work of microenterprise development, work that strives to meet the needs of our nation’s underserved entrepreneurs. 2011 continued to present many challenges to entrepreneurs striving to start or grow viable enterprises that create the jobs necessary to get our economy on track. Although unemployment is decreasing slightly, capital is beginning to trickle back into the markets; there are persistent challenges that continue to impede the success of entrepreneurs and our ability …

For me the end of 2011 also marks my first anniversary with AEO. After joining the team last December, and making the move from New York City to Washington, DC in January, it has been a year full of leaning and intrigue. I learned about appropriations, committees, and subcommittees; microloans, "TA", and the multitude of SBA lending programs that exist to support micro businesses; and that is just a start.

It has been a pleasure getting to know our members over the past 12 months, and hearing all of …

Though our country has had a very difficult year, I have remained overwhelmingly optimistic about the future and the promise that microenterprise has for our nation’s recovery.

I am looking forward to a new year filled with prosperity.

I pray that you and your families will be filled with the wonder and touched by the peace of the season.

Happy Holidays! After a month of being with AEO I have developed what will hopefully be an attractive social media strategy to get our board of directors, members, and small businesses more up to date news and involvement in microfinance.  I am excited for the New Year and the growth potential for main street businesses. I am always available to answer any questions regarding social media or the news I post so please feel free to ask questions and post to AEO’s various social media outlets and I will …

AEO November Policy Update

With Thanksgiving feasts behind us and the Holiday Season underway, there is much to report.  This past weekend saw the second annual Small Business Saturday event, which encouraged people all across the country to support their communities by shopping at locally-owned small businesses.  From all accounts, Small Business Saturday was an absolute success.

Right before Thanksgiving, the White House hosted a briefing on “Women and the Economy,” which AEO attended.  The speakers included Valerie Jarret, Senior Advisor to the President; Hilda Solis, Secretary of the Department of Labor; …
